What to Do When You Are Failing AP Calculus
Published Aug 15
The First Thing to Figure Out: What Is Actually Stuck?
Failing usually has a reason. Your job is to find it before it gets worse.
Is it algebra? Many students fail calculus because they cannot manipulate expressions, solve equations, or simplify. Calculus is just algebra applied to new situations.
Is it conceptual? You understand the procedure but do not see why it matters. You can take a derivative but do not know what it means.
Is it procedural? You get the idea but make mistakes or forget the steps. Derivatives make sense, but you mess up the quotient rule.
Is it exam strategy? You understand the material but freeze on tests, run out of time, or make careless errors.
What to Do Right Now
-
Talk to your teacher. Tell them specifically what is not working. Not "calculus is hard," but "I understand what a derivative is, but I cannot do chain rule problems."
-
Get a diagnostic. Ask your teacher for a practice test or problem set on the last topic you studied. See where you miss points.
-
Do not wait until midterm or the AP exam. If it is November and you are failing, you have time to fix this. If it is April, you need help now.
When Tutoring Works
Tutoring works best when:
- You know what is stuck (not just "I do not get it")
- You are willing to work on it between sessions
- You have 4+ weeks before your major test or deadline
Tutoring does NOT substitute for:
- Doing your homework
- Studying for exams on your own
- Building strong algebra fundamentals (that takes longer)
If You Are Running Out of Time
If you are close to the AP exam or end of term:
- Focus on the topics on the exam (not everything)
- Practice under time pressure (the exam is timed)
- Get feedback on your free-response answers
- Know which topics are worth more points and prioritize those
The grade can come back up, but you have to act now.

BC is not a harder version of AB — it is AB plus two more units. Here is exactly what BC adds, what the difference feels like in an actual problem, and how to choose.
